General/Surgical Extractions

No one wants to hear that they need a dental extraction, but sometimes removing one or more teeth can be the best option for your oral and overall health. Our experienced dental team performs routine and surgical extractions in our Narre Warren clinic.

When Is Extraction Necessary?

We’ll always do whatever we can to save your natural tooth from extraction; however, there are circumstances when removing your tooth is best:

  • Severe decay or infection — If bacteria reach your tooth’s inner pulp chamber, an extraction may be best.
  • Dental trauma or injury — When your tooth is badly broken below the gumline, we can’t always repair it, making an extraction necessary.
  • Advanced gum disease — Gum disease can destroy the bones and tissues that support your teeth, causing them to loosen. If this happens, extraction could be your only option.
  • Impacted teeth — When your wisdom teeth get trapped under your jawbone, it can cause pain and infection. A surgical extraction can alleviate discomfort and eliminate the chance of infection.
  • Before implants or dentures — We often extract teeth to make room for dental implants or dentures.

The Benefits of an OPG Machine for Extractions

Our dental clinic uses an Orthopantomogram machine (OPG) to capture panoramic images of your entire mouth. Instead of uncomfortable plastic x-ray tabs that can pinch your mouth, the OPG machine rotates around your head, mapping your teeth, jaw joints and nasal/sinus cavities. Here’s what this state-of-the-art technology can do:

Mapping Wisdom Teeth

The OPG machine shows us the angle and positioning of your impacted wisdom teeth, helping us customise surgical guides and improve outcomes.

Locating Major Nerves

The OPG images let us see where your tooth’s roots are in relation to your inferior alveolar nerve, allowing for more precise, comfortable treatment.

Checking Sinus Proximity

OPG scans help us see how close your tooth’s roots are to your sinus cavities, making it easier to avoid complications during your extraction procedure.

Spotting Potential Issues

If you have an infection, cyst, misshapen roots or anything that could complicate the extraction process, an OPG scan could help identify these underlying issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, at Melbourne Dental Vision, we perform safe, comfortable wisdom teeth removal.

Wisdom teeth are also called third molars. They are the last teeth to emerge, typically occurring in our late teens and early twenties; however, not everyone develops wisdom teeth.

Why Don't We Need Wisdom Teeth Anymore?

Our distant ancestors relied on a diet of tough plant materials and raw meats that required significant chewing power. Anthropologists believe that as our diets evolved, the need for large chewing surfaces and extra molars decreased. At the same time, our jaw size also decreased, leaving less room for third molars to emerge properly.

Problems caused by wisdom teeth:

  • Impaction — With smaller jaws, there often isn't enough room for wisdom teeth. This causes them to become stuck or "impacted" in the gums.
  • Misalignment — Wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, sometimes even horizontally.
  • Cavities and gum disease — Partially erupted wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean, increasing their risk of developing decay and gum disease.

Due to these potential complications, our Narre Warren dentists often recommend wisdom teeth removal.

Sedation Options for Your Comfort

While the thought of multiple teeth removal may seem daunting, at Melbourne Dental Vision, your comfort is paramount, so we offer leading-edge sedation options. General anaesthetic provides complete sedation and is safely administered at a private hospital. Penthrox, or the 'green whistle,' is ideal for calming nerves and can be provided at our Narre Warren clinic.

To see if wisdom teeth removal is right for you, we encourage you to contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our expert dentists.

The Extraction Procedure: What to Expect

When you visit our dental clinic for a consultation, we’ll assess your teeth and gums and customise a treatment plan suited to your needs. We’ll explain the extraction procedure and answer all your questions.

And if you’re feeling anxious about your procedure, we offer nitrous oxide and general anaesthesia options to keep you calm during your time with us.

Routine Extraction

Here are the steps for a routine extraction:

  1. Numbing your mouth — We’ll use a local anaesthetic to completely numb your mouth. You may feel pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure.
  2. Loosening your tooth — Next, we’ll use a special dental instrument to loosen your tooth from its socket.
  3. Removing your tooth — Once it’s loosened, we’ll use dental forceps to remove your tooth. Then, we’ll place gauze over the extraction site to encourage blood clot formation.

Surgical Extraction

If your tooth is broken at the gumline, or if you have impacted wisdom teeth, the procedure is slightly different:

  1. Administering anaesthesia — If you choose general anaesthesia, we perform surgical extractions at a local hospital.
  2. Making the incision — We’ll open your gum tissue to expose your tooth and the underlying bone.
  3. Removing your tooth — We may have to section your tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
  4. Closing the extraction site — Once we’ve removed all the tooth fragments and cleaned the socket, we’ll stitch your gums to close the area and promote healing.
